Jealousy: It’s Not Always Bad

Scripture: “You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.”Exodus 20:5

A Different Kind of Jealousy

I woke up one morning with a scripture on my mind—the very second I opened my eyes. The night before, I had prayed, asking the Lord to help me with some unforgiveness. I knew that harboring unforgiveness can fester like a deep wound that refuses to heal.

In my heart, I wrestled with whether my feelings—stemming from jealousy over something valuable to me—were valid or if I was being petty and unforgiving. God knows my heart, and I didn’t want to sit in a cesspool of hurt and frustration. I prayed and went to sleep.

The next morning, He immediately spoke to my heart:

“Do not bow and serve them, and do not worship them (other gods or idols); for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, inflicting the punishment of the fathers on the children, to the third and fourth generations.”Exodus 20:5

I found that interesting. I know God cannot be jealous in a sinful way. So, I thanked Him for speaking to me and asked for clarity.

A Lesson from the Dogs

Later that morning, as I took my dogs to their run, they were calm—until I opened the gate. Suddenly, they began running the perimeter, growling and searching for threats. Once they were sure everything was secure, they relaxed.

God spoke to my heart at that moment:

“Do you see how they ran, searching for anything that might be a potential threat?”

“Yes,” I answered.

“That’s what healthy jealousy looks like. Your dogs were protecting what rightfully belongs to them. They knew their space, their food, and their safety mattered. They were making sure nothing was violating what was theirs. That is the kind of jealousy you are struggling with—one that protects, rather than envies.”

Tears welled up in my eyes. I suddenly understood the battle in my heart.

Righteous vs. Sinful Jealousy

We often associate jealousy with sin—envying someone else’s success, looks, possessions, or abilities. But God’s jealousy is different. His jealousy is not selfish—it is protective.

“You must worship no other gods, for the LORD, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.”Exodus 34:14

God desires our worship, love, and faithfulness because they rightfully belong to Him. When we turn to idols—whether that’s relationships, material things, or worldly desires—we defile ourselves. As Ezekiel 23:29-30 warns, seeking fulfillment in anything other than God leads to destruction.

God’s jealousy is His fierce love for us. He knows that only He can satisfy our deepest needs, and anything we put before Him will ultimately fail us.

Cross References for Deeper Study

Deuteronomy 4:24“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.”
️ * God’s jealousy is not about insecurity but about holiness and devotion. He longs for us to be fully His.

2 Corinthians 11:2“For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to Him.”
️ * Paul expresses the same kind of protective jealousy God has, longing for believers to remain faithful to Christ.

James 4:4-5“You adulterous people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that He jealously longs for the spirit He has caused to dwell in us?”
* God deeply desires our devotion, knowing that when we chase after worldly things, we hurt ourselves and separate from Him.

Examining Our Jealousy

When jealousy creeps into our hearts, we must examine its root. Is it sinful—born of pride, selfishness, or comparison? Or is it righteous—protecting something God has entrusted to us?

Take a moment today to lay your heart before the Lord. Ask Him to reveal any jealousy that is not from Him. If it is, surrender it. If it is righteous, ask for wisdom in how to protect what He has given you.

🙏 Prayer: Lord, help me to discern between sinful jealousy and the protective kind that comes from You. Purify my heart and align my desires with Your will. May I worship You alone and trust You to be my everything. Amen.

Blessings to YOU,

Cassandra Lee
