Be Still and Know – A Devotional on Surrendering to God
Daily Devotional
Scripture: “Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
I felt like the Lord hit me with that verse one morning. To “be still” in Him and know He is God. But what does it really mean?
The phrase “be still” comes from the Hebrew word Rapha, which means “to be weak, to let go, to release.” It calls us to complete surrender. The phrase “and know” in its original Hebrew, together with “be still,” carries the meaning “in order to know.”
So, the true meaning is this: “Surrender – in order that you may know that I am God.”
Seeking Him and surrendering to Him is the key to truly knowing Him. We are called to seek His will in every moment. We allow Him to lead us. He guides us to fulfill His purpose. His will, His plan, His way. You can know “of” Jesus but not really “know” him. Head knowing is much different than a true heart, soul, and mind knowing. I can know someone and have a general idea or understanding about them. To really KNOW them, I need to be surrendered to giving my time to study them. I need to see who they are, what they are all about, and what makes them tick. Our walk with Christ is similar. This is a relationship that deserves first place in my life above all other relationships. I can’t know him without intentionally spending time with him. I need to get to know him through his word and prayer. Spending time with other believers helps as we encourage one another in our walk with him. To know him takes a willing heart that is surrendered and seeking him out more deeply than just an acquaintance.
Knowing of Jesus vs. Truly Knowing Him
There is a vast difference between knowing of Jesus and truly knowing Him. Head knowledge is not the same as a deep, heart-level understanding.
I can know someone—have a general idea about them—but to really KNOW them, I must:
1. Spend time with them
2. Study who they are
3. Understand what they are about
Our walk with Christ is the same. This relationship should come first—above all others. We must intentionally spend time in His Word. We must pray and be with other believers. Only then will we truly know Him.
What Does “Knowing” God Really Mean?
1. To recognize His nature
2. To be acquainted with and experience Him
3. To be aware of truth and convinced of His reality
4. To study and have a practical understanding of His ways
Stillness Requires Trust
Choosing to be still is an act of unconditional surrender. It’s a decision to stop striving, stop resisting, and trust His plan instead of our own.
In Psalm 46:8-9, we see that fighting against God leads to brokenness. Those who surrender, however, will experience His peace and provision. Stillness is not passivity—it is trust.
Reflection Questions:
1. Are you striving to control something that God is asking you to surrender?
2. How can you practice stillness in your daily life?
3. Do you know of God, or do you truly know Him?
Additional Scriptures for Study:
Exodus 14:14 – “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Isaiah 26:3 – “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
John 15:4-5 – “Remain in me, as I also remain in you… apart from me, you can do nothing.”
Friend, let’s surrender it all today. Be still, let go, and KNOW that He is God.
Blessings to YOU,
Cassandra Lee

Amen Amen Amen!❤️❤️❤️
Again, I needed to be reminded of what “be still” really means. Seems like there is so much to be anxious about these days. But If God is Sovereign, and He is, then we need to trust him in all things. And it is not enough to have head knowledge of this. Our actions need to match up with that kind of trust!
