Scripture: “Then He said to me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ So I answered, ‘O Lord GOD, You know.’” – Ezekiel 37:3

Overcoming Hopelessness with Faith

When we look at our issues, struggles, and difficult circumstances, they can seem impossible. We see the wayward child, troubled marriage, financial hardships, or sickness, and it all feels hopeless. In these times, we can either seek God’s wisdom and guidance or take matters into our own hands. But when we try to play God, we will end up with more trouble than we started—just like the prodigal son in Luke 15. Trusting in ourselves will leave us broken, weary, and hopeless. But God!

God specializes in the impossible. It seems He really enjoys working in and through situations that seem hopeless. With man, it’s impossible, but with God, all things are possible!!!!

God’s Power to Restore: The Vision of Dry Bones

In Ezekiel 37, God gives the prophet a vision of a valley filled with dry bones. Israel, at that time, was a divided and scattered nation, seemingly beyond restoration. Yet, God asks Ezekiel a powerful question: “Son of man, can these bones live?” (Ezekiel 37:3). Ezekiel wisely responds, “Sovereign Lord, only you know.” This was not doubt, nor was it an attempt to control the situation. It was complete trust in God’s power to bring life where there was none.

Speaking Life Over Dead Situations

God commands Ezekiel to prophesy over the bones, and as he speaks, they begin to rattle and come together, bone to bone. But they were still lifeless. It wasn’t until God breathed His Spirit into them that they truly came to life (Ezekiel 37:10). This process reflects God’s order and timing. He moves according to His perfect will, just as Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 14:40, “Let all things be done decently and in order.”

Ezekiel obeyed God’s command to speak life over the dry bones:

When we declare God’s truth in our lives, things start to shift. It may not happen all at once, but every prayer, every act of faith, and every moment of trust is part of God’s process. He restores in His order, His timing, and His way (1 Corinthians 14:40).

Trusting God in Your Valley of Dry Bones

We may feel powerless, only God can breathe life into what seems hopeless and dead. We may speak over our circumstances all day, but without His power, it will be futile. Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” His Word carries life, power, and transformation.

When we find ourselves in the valley of dry bones, God stands with us and asks the same question: “Can these bones live?” How will we respond? Will we attempt to fix things in our own strength, or will we surrender in trust, like Ezekiel, knowing that only God has the power to bring life and restoration?

So, when God asks, “Can these bones live?” our response should be full of faith and trust:

“Sovereign Lord, only You know.” – Ezekiel 37:3

God is with you in the valley. Trust Him, seek Him, and believe that He can restore what seems lost.
