Daily Devotional:

Are you close enough to hear the whisper of his still small voice? Like a husband and wife that are closely connected, since marriage is intended to be a reflection of our relationship with God. How close are you, the Bride, to the Bridegroom, Jesus? Are you close enough to separate HIS voice from all the noise of this world? Can you feel the leading of the Holy Spirit within you? Are sensitive, tuned in, to the more quiet and subtle communications in the relationship?

If we are standing across a wide canyon from each other and I whisper something to you… will you hear me? I am certain you will not. If we are a few feet apart, in a room filled with people who are all talking loudly, and I whisper something to you… will you hear me? I doubt you will hear clearly. If we are on opposite sides of an empty room and I whisper something to you… you might pick up some of what I’m saying, but not all.

But if you come close, stand right beside me, and I whisper in your ear… will you hear me? Absolutely! Finally, you’re close enough with nothing between us to interfere.

This is why Jesus said in John 15:4: “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you abide in Me.” Where are we in our walk, our relationship with him.

Hearing God’s Voice in the Chaos

Several years ago, I went to an event. I planned to sign up to be part of a songwriting group. I hurried to get to Nashville after work, determined to be there on time.

As I stood in the fun, crazy, loud chaos, I heard the Lord speak: “This is not My path for you. You can head home now.”

Wait—what? No! Really? With a heavy heart, I made my way out of the building, holding off tears until I was outside where I could cry and pray.

I asked, “Lord, why did You let me come in the first place? You could’ve told me no earlier.”

Then I heard Him say, “I wanted you to hear My voice above all the excitement, noise, fun, and chaos.” ” Suddenly, my tears of sadness were tears of JOY!! My Father wanted
me to know that I would listen and obey, even if I was not going to get what I thought I wanted or needed. He wanted me to experience how much I wanted to obey his will over mine. To me, that was more thrilling than anything that could have come out of that event. I want to stay close enough to hear even the faintest whispers of his voice.

The Power of Obedience

He wants us, your and me, to experience the peace and incredible joy of choosing His will over our own. But Are we close enough to hear him when he leads? Are we paying attention or to busy doing things our way?

The Law—the just rule of God—reveals our sin and rebellion. It shines light on our pride and exposes the hardness of our hearts. The law breaks the rocky hearts of men in pieces. It shakes their conscience. It fills their minds with a sense of God’s fiery wrath and the punishment they deserve. Then the gospel, which becomes more intimate, speaks gently to us of the peace and pardon available in Christ. It is the voice of love, grace, and mercy, of peace, pardon, righteousness, and the free gift of salvation through Christ.

But God promises in Ezekiel 36:26: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”

He warns us of His coming judgment because He desires that none should perish. But for those who repent and receive Jesus as Lord, He breaks the walls our sin created.

He sets us free and seals us with the Holy Spirit—the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead. We are no longer captives of darkness but redeemed children of light.

Stay Close Enough to Hear the Whisper

Because of His grace, we won’t experience the fullness of His wrath. Instead, we receive His loving discipline that transforms us from the inside out.

He speaks softly—in that still small voice. And if we abide in Him, He reveals the peace, joy, mercy, and love we desperately need.

Snuggle up close to Jesus. There is no greater joy than life in Him. His will. His truth. His plans. His way. Are you close enough to hear?
