Make the Enemy Flee: The Power of Surrender Devotional
Daily Devotional
Scripture: “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’ Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:6-7
Devotional Thought:
We’ve all heard the phrase, “Resist the devil, and he will flee.” It’s quoted often, but rarely in its full context. The key to making the enemy flee isn’t just resistance—it’s submission. James 4:7 makes it clear: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Without full surrender to God, we have no real power to resist Satan’s attacks. On our own we are not strong enough, smart enough, or powerful enough to resist the enemy…but if we are in Christ, we stand covered by the blood of the one who is!!! Jesus defeated death, hell, and the grave – he has ALL power and authority over the enemy. So, we surrender to HIM, and by that surrender, we are covered. Then we can resist the enemy and he has to flee because of the authority we have in Christ Jesus.
Now – this is where you can’t “Fake it til you make it”. The enemy knows whether or not we are truly submitted to God – there’s no tricking him on that one. He’s had centuries to study human weaknesses, and he customizes attacks to exploit them. Too often, we want the supernatural power of God to protect us. We want His blessings. However, we resist fully giving our lives to Him. That’s like trying to win a battle without armor or a weapon – we are going to fail!!
Another important truth: Nowhere in Scripture are we told to rebuke Satan. People get carried away rebuking satan and even mocking him. We almost treat him like a competitive sports opponent. We talk trash as if to show how tough we are, but we are not called to do that. Apart from Jesus, Satan has the power to devour. Even Michael, the archangel, didn’t do it—instead, he said, “The Lord rebuke you.” (Jude 1:9). Only the Lord is shown directly rebuking Satan. Michael, the archangel, argued with the devil about the body of Moses. He did not dare pronounce a railing judgment against him. Instead, he said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’ (Jude 1:9) Our role is to resist the devil. We do this by clothing ourselves in the full armor of God and being covered by the blood of Jesus. We must stand firm in His Word and His authority. We must resist the devil. Also, we should live a life fully surrendered to Him.
Reflection:
Are there areas in your life where you’re resisting God instead of the enemy? What actions can you take today to fully submit to Christ? Doing THAT is the ONLY way you will be able to resist the enemy.
Prayer:
Lord, I surrender every part of my life to You. Help me to stand firm in Your Word and resist the enemy. Give me wisdom and strength. I want to live fully in Your will. Then, the enemy has no place in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Blessings to YOU,
