The Power of Words: Truth vs. New Age Lies | Devotional

Daily Devotional

Scripture: “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”Proverbs 18:21

Words hold weight. They can breathe encouragement or stir up destruction, heal wounded hearts and minds or cut deeper than a sword. Proverbs reminds us that life and death are in the tongue—what we say has real consequences. Words matter and there is no way around that reality.

But let’s be clear: we are not little gods, and we don’t have the power to “speak things into existence.”

The world has twisted the truth of Proverbs 18:21, turning it into a tool for self-exaltation. The New Age movement preaches that if you simply declare wealth, success, or health, the universe will align. It will make it happen. Manifest it. Speak it, claim it, and it’s yours. That’s not biblical truth—that’s deception. This is one of the super sneaky ways the enemy deceives. He appeals to our PRIDE. Do you see him, the enemy, prowling about. He is looking for someone to devour. If he can devour us with our own pride, that is even better in his book!!!

God Alone Creates by His Word

From the very beginning, God spoke, and creation obeyed: “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”Genesis 1:3

That’s true power. Only God has the authority to call things into existence from nothing (Romans 4:17). We are called to mirror His truth as His creation. We are to seek to be like him…not try to be him. We must seek His will and His way. We should not rewrite reality with our own desires. This false idea suggests we can “speak” our future into being. It shifts the focus away from God and onto self. This shift is exactly what the enemy wants. It’s the same old lie from the Garden: “You will be like God” (Genesis 3:5). Can you see how the sneaky snake is still slithering through the garden of our hearts and minds??? We weren’t created to manipulate the universe. We were created to worship the One who rules it.

The Difference Between Speaking Life and Speaking Lies

Yes, our words matter. But not because they wield some mystical force. Our words matter because they reveal what’s in our hearts.

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”Matthew 12:34

Are we speaking words that align with God’s truth? Are we using our tongues to build up others (Ephesians 4:29) and declare the gospel (Romans 10:9-10)? Or are we speaking empty words, trying to twist spiritual laws to serve our own gain? This is why James warns us so strongly about the tongue: “The tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members. It stains the whole body. It sets on fire the entire course of life. It is set on fire by hell.”James 3:6

That’s serious. And it should make us pause. Instead of manifesting our own will, we are called to submit to God’s will. Instead of speaking worldly affirmations, we are to declare His promises, which are already written and secure. Instead of trying to control our future, we are to trust in the Lord with all our hearts (Proverbs 3:5-6).

How do we speak life in the right way? We don’t speak life by trying to command our reality. We speak life by:

Praying according to God’s Word (1 John 5:14-15)
Encouraging others with truth (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Worshiping God in spirit and truth (John 4:24)
Using our words to bring peace, not division (Proverbs 15:1)
Speaking the gospel boldly (2 Timothy 4:2)

Life and death are in the tongue—but not because of some mystical “law of attraction.” Our words bring life when they align with God’s Word and bring death when they promote sin and deception. So, let’s reject the lies of the enemy and embrace the power of God’s truth. Speak life—real life, the kind that only comes through Jesus Christ.

Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be pleasing to the Lord (Psalm 19:14). That is where true power lies.

Words of truth… How powerful are these scriptures… Thanks for a great reminder of how we are to receive God’s words and not twist them to fit our narrative…
