What’s That Smell? | Devotional on Sin & Surrender
Daily Devotional
Are You Carrying the Stench of Sin?
Today’s devotional might seem a little odd, but stick with me! Have you ever had a dog come inside after rolling around in something rotten? The smell is unbearable—like death itself! Dogs do this instinctively, often as a way to mark territory or show dominance. But here’s the question: Are we carrying around a spiritual stench without realizing it?
Sin stinks. It is offensive to God, much like that foul odor filling your house when your pet drags in decay. Sin has an odor in the spiritual realm. When we continue living in rebellion, we cling to old habits, attitudes, and mindsets. We are spreading the stench of sin in our lives.
The Stench of Rebellion
Isaiah 59:2 says: Your iniquities have separated you from your God. Your sins have hidden His face from you. As a result, He will not hear.
Isaiah 65:5 These people are a stench in my nostrils, an acrid smell that never goes away.
When we hold on to sin and refuse to repent, we become like those in Isaiah 65. These are people who provoke God. They pursue their own ways and reject His correction. God says they are a stench in His nostrils, burning all day long.
That’s a sobering thought, isn’t it? We wouldn’t let a stinky, mud-covered dog ruin our home. Similarly, God will not allow sin to pollute His house. His house is our hearts. God will not allow sin to pollute His house—our hearts.
Are You Spiritually “Nose Blind”?
Have you ever been in a room that smelled awful, but after a while, you stopped noticing it? We can become spiritually nose blind to sin in our lives. We excuse, justify, or ignore it, assuming we are fine while carrying the stench of rebellion before a holy God.
What areas of your life still smell like the world?
- Are there habits, addictions, or attitudes you haven’t surrendered?
- Do you walk in pride, refusing to repent?
- Are you allowing compromise to dull your spiritual senses?
Time for a Spiritual Cleansing
If we want to walk in God’s presence, power, and blessing, we must be willing to repent and be cleansed. Psalm 141:2 says:
“Let my prayer be set before You as incense.”
Incense was a sweet-smelling sacrifice in worship. Our repentance and surrender to Christ become a pleasing aroma to God.
What’s That Smell in Your Life?
Ask yourself today:
Am I carrying the sweet fragrance of Christ or the stench of rebellion?
Have I truly surrendered every area of my life to Him?
What sins do I need to confess and be cleansed from?
God is merciful, but He won’t ignore sin. He desires to purify us, restore us, and fill us with His presence. Let’s choose to walk in holiness, repentance, and the sweet aroma of surrender today.
It’s time to wash off the stench of sin and step into the fragrance of grace!
Blessings to YOU,
Cassandra Lee
