Do Not Love the World: Choosing Eternal Treasure | Devotional

Not of This World: A Devotional on 1 John 2:15-17

Scripture: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Everything in the world—includes the desires of the flesh, desires of the eyes, and pride of life. These are not from the Father. They are from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. — 1 John 2:15-17

Have you ever held onto something you thought would last forever, only to watch it slip through your fingers? Maybe a trend seemed significant. A relationship or a personal achievement felt extremely important. Only later did you realize how temporary it really was. That’s what John is reminding us of in this passage. The world and everything in it is fading away, but God’s truth, His will, and His promises remain. Everything we do, in Christ Jesus, is eternal. As we mature in our walk, our decision making process should change. We become more and more Kingdom minded.

Now, let’s be clear—this isn’t about hating the earth or the people in it, not at all. God created this world, and it is filled with beauty, purpose, and His fingerprints everywhere. People, yes, even the ones that you may not like so much, are made in his image. So, we have to keep that in perspective. We should learn to pray for our enemies. Ask God to bless them greatly. The only choice they have is to finally SEE the one who is blessing them!! John refers to “the world” as the organized system under the enemy’s influence. It is a system that pulls our hearts away from God. This system entices us with temporary pleasures. It creates the craving for more. There is a need to be seen. We all have it. Yet, it will lead to the pursuit of self above all else. But none of it satisfies, and none of it lasts. We will be left empty, dry, and all of the pursuits will be for nothing.

Think about Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). Satan tempted Him with food, power, and recognition—all things the world says we need. Yet, Jesus responded with God’s Word, standing firm in what is eternal. We are called to do the same.

So, where is your heart anchored today? Are you chasing what won’t last, or are you setting your eyes on the things above (Colossians 3:2)? The world is passing away. However, your walk with Christ continues and will echo into eternity. Your faithfulness to Him lasts and will be rewarded. The treasures you store in heaven (Matthew 6:19-20) last forever.

Take a moment to pray. Ask God to reveal any worldly affections, desires, habits, and mindsets. These are pulling your heart away from Him. Let His Word saturate your soul, and choose today to walk in what is eternal.

Additional Scriptures for Reflection:

  • Matthew 4:1-11 – Jesus resists the temptations of the world through Scripture.
  • Colossians 3:2 – “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
  • Matthew 6:19-20 – Store up treasures in heaven where they will never fade.

What worldly thing do you need to surrender today? Let’s talk in the comments—I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Blessings to YOU,

Cassandra Lee
